English in the Modern Office
English is used through out the professional world. In this series of blogs we’ll focus of some words, grammar and phrases that pop up in the modern office.
Bolder English students work all over the world but they respect and appreciate American Business English as the standard, or bell weather, to base their ESL learning on. As instructors, we’re always asked the correct way to say something or ask a question in an office or interview setting.
Today, one of my students wanted to know the best way to ask questions to a potential IT team candidate. Here are some example questions using different forms of grammar:
“Do you know about system upgrades?” – Simple Present
“Did you do C++ coding before?” – Simple Past
“Have you ever managed a large team before?” – Present Perfect (*Notice the signal words ‘ever’ and ‘before’!)
“Where are you working now and what are you working on?” – Present Continuous
“Will you learn PHP soon?” – Future
“What were you doing for 6 months in Dubai?” – Past Progressive
“What would your ideal position be?” – 2nd or Unreal Conditional (*Hint: Would)
“When can you start!?” – Simple Present (that implies the future)
As a challenge, try and compose the same sentences using different grammar forms, ie; “Will you learn PHP soon?” -> “Would you learn PHP if the project required it?”
What’s important here is NOT remembering all of the different names of grammar forms BUT knowing how to use these forms properly in your speech and writing. Bolder English instructors are friendly experts at helping you with these English grammar rules & their usage.
